When it comes to custom portraits, one of the most common questions clients ask is:

Should I go for a pencil drawing or a painting?

Both options are great, it just depends on the feeling you want to portray. Let’s break down the differences to help you decide.

Most people think choosing between a pencil drawing and a painting is just about black & white vs color.

But honestly, that’s not the real decision.

When I’m working with a client, I don’t start with the medium, I start with the photo, the purpose, and the feeling they want.

How I actually decide for my clients

The first thing I look at is the photo.

If the image has strong shadows, nice contrast, and a certain emotional depth, even if it’s slightly blurry,  I’ll usually recommend a pencil drawing.

But if the photo is very sharp, colorful, maybe from a birthday shoot or professional session, then it’s already calling for a painting.

I also ask:

  • Who is this for?
  • What do you want them to feel when they see it?

Because that changes everything.

Pencil Drawing, when it’s the right choice

Pencil is calm. It’s subtle. It doesn’t try too hard, but it always lands.

  • Perfect for gifts to friends, partners, or family
  • Great for emotional or meaningful moments
  • Works well even with slightly imperfect photos

If you’re thinking:

“I just want something meaningful, not too loud”

Then pencil is your best option.

It’s simple, but it never misses.

Painting — when you want presence

Painting is different.

It’s bold. It carries energy. It pulls attention immediately.

  • Best for birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones
  • Perfect if you want to impress or make a statement
  • Brings out personality through colour

If your goal is:

“I want this to stand out the moment they see it”

Then go for a painting.

There’s something about seeing yourself in colour — people connect to it instantly.

The mistake most people make

A lot of people choose based on price first…

Instead of asking:

“What kind of reaction do I want from this?”

That’s where wrong decisions happen.

Because a calm, emotional moment done as a loud painting can feel off.

And a bold celebration done as a quiet pencil piece might not hit as strongly as it should.

A simple way to decide

  • If it’s emotional, soft, or personal → Pencil
  • If it’s bold, celebratory, or meant to impress → Painting

Still unsure?

Ask yourself: Where will it hang? What story are you telling? Do you want it to whisper or speak loud?

You also don’t have to figure it out alone.

Just send your photo and tell me what you’re trying to achieve — I’ll guide you to the option that fits best.
